Mainland China is a safe place for LGBT travelers. Homosexuality is legal and, especially if you are not Chinese, local people won’t care much about your orientation. People don’t talk about it as openly as we do in the West but in major cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, and Hong Kong, coming out is common (though still more widely accepted by the younger generation).
In these cities, you’ll find LGBT communities and gathering spaces that include bars, restaurants, and cafes. The city of Chengdu, famously known around the world as the home of the giant panda, was recently named the ‘most inclusive city in China’ by Condé Nast Traveler. In smaller cities or rural areas, LGBT travelers will get attention simply because they are foreigners in China, not necessarily because of what people may think about your sexual orientation. Across the country, you’ll notice that female friends often walk hand in hand but couples rarely display affection in public. Your sexual orientation is considered private and we’ll brief hotels about accommodation arrangements beforehand so you can remain discrete throughout your trip.
