This past Tuesday night WildChina attended the fifth annual Time Out Food Awards to see how fared our favorite Beijing restaurants.
The invitation-only event was held in the stunning new restaurant, Brasserie Flo. Actually, stunning doesn’t quite cut it–let’s go with jaw-dropping. Our approach to the gilded, iron-wrought gates was peppered with comments like, “Uh, I think we’re heading to that castle-like building” and “Are those lights coming from inside the building?!” High ceilings, draping chandeliers, and free-flowing champagne set the tone for a classy evening celebrating the best food Beijing has to offer.
Selected by a panel of food experts, the 15 awards highlight dining both fine and casual, old and new, and Chinese and international. We were particularly eager to find out who won the brand new award for “Best Sustainable Dining”. The inclusion of this award is definitely a nod of the head towards the recent interest in local sourcing, organic farming, and environmentally-friendly business practices. An endeavor all the more commendable given how hard it is to do in China. The first Time Out Best Sustainable Dining award went to the newly locally sourced Yi House.
We were very excited to see familiar faces among both the award recipients and the packed crowd of critics, chefs, restaurant owners, and journalists. WildChina favorite, Maison Boulud, won a total of 5 awards–including the Readers’ Choice award and Restaurant of the Year–a decision we wholeheartedly agree with! Another fun win for WildChina was a restaurant we’ve been testing all year with ever favorable results. This year, the Best New Restaurant award went to TRB Temple Restaurant Beijing and we are glad to see their great work recognized.
