Join us for a Thanksgiving in China you’ll never forget.
Celebrating any major holiday away from home can feel a bit strange. But there’s no reason why ‘a bit different’ needs to equate to ‘not as good.’ This Thanksgiving, embrace living in China and dive headfirst into a celebration filled with fun, friends, cultural immersion, and, very importantly for many of us, food!
Inspired by WildChina Founder Mei Zhang’s travelogue and cookbook, Travels Through Dali: with a leg of ham, this is a journey into the heart of Yunnan on a quest to discover and explore local culinary specialties. This region is renowned for its salt-cured ham, mushrooms varietals, cheese-making (a rarity in China), and unusual herbs.
Different villages hold the crown for making the very best of something, and we’ll be on a mission to meet chefs, artisans, and farmers who have been honing their skills and living ‘farm-to-table’ for generations. We’ll hear their stories, share their meals, and become immersed in their lives.
Thanksgiving is about…food
This journey has the “feeling totally stuffed with delicious food” part of Thanksgiving well and truly covered. We take a spin on the classic turkey and stuffing with traditional Dali offerings, and bring you inside local kitchens to experience the flavors and smells yourself.
From meeting with Mr. Yang on our quest to find the region’s best salt-cured ham to making cheese with a farmer’s wife, there is no shortage of good eats. After all, isn’t it Thanksgiving?
Thanksgiving is about…friends and family
This is a small group journey which means you’ll be joined by up to 9 other like-minded souls. By the end of the journey, and after everything you’ll experience together, this group will feel like family.
As will many of the local insiders we meet along the way. Nothing says “welcome to the family” like sharing stories over a meal.
Thanksgiving is about…tradition
When we work with local communities in China, we’re striving to show them the value and importance of their heritage. We believe that diverse cultures and traditions should be cultivated and appreciated, not put on for show.
Much of what we do is working closely with communities to ensure their customs and way of life can be shared with you authentically. And who knows, you might enjoy this version of Thanksgiving so much that you’re tempted to start your own new traditions!
