Get close up to China’s most elusive wildlife on this animal adventure. You’ll discover rare moon bears at a rescue center, go in search of leopard cats on a night hike, and join a ranger expedition for a once-in-a-lifetime chance to view a giant panda in the wild.

About this Journey

Embark on a botanical and wildlife exploration of Sichuan during this special adventure. Discover this humid province’s wondrous flora and fauna, ranging from the fancifully named moon bear to the signature giant panda, while exploring primeval forests and secluded waterfalls. Golden snub-nosed monkeys, boulder-strewn gorges, and bejeweled lakes await you. You’ll visit local villages and experience Tibetan culture in the natural oasis that is Jiuzhaigou, where scenes from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon were filmed.

Itinerary

Day 1 Chengdu

View the fancifully named moon bear at the Moon Bear Rescue Center • Energy levels permitting, pay a visit to Bamboo Park, where herons and egrets mingle amidst 140 species of bamboo

Day 2Qingcheng Mountain – Dujiangyan

Pass by waterfalls and bamboo forests as you hike up UNESCO World Heritage Site Qingcheng Mountain • Admire China’s cuddly black and white icon at Dujiangyan Panda Base • Energy levels permitting, enjoy a face-changing Sichuan Opera show in the evening

Please be aware that visitors are not currently permitted to hug pandas in China’s panda reserves. This is subject to change, so contact us for the most up-to-date information. However, Dujiangyan’s Panda Keeper program is a wonderful alternative that allows a unique look into the daily life of these iconic animals.

Day 3Min Mountains

Follow along the twists and turns of the Fu River to a traditional village to visit a hunter turned farmer • Continue on to a picturesque Qing Dynasty Muslim village • Arrive in a wild panda nature reserve, a 100,000 acre sanctuary that contains one of the most diverse and intact ecosystems in Asia

Day 4 - 5Wild Panda Nature Reserve

Guided by experienced rangers, explore the reserve during morning and evening excursions while enjoying nature trails and stunning vistas of waterfalls, boulder-strewn gorges, and misty peaks • Though sightings are extremely rare, we hope to catch a glimpse of the elusive wild panda • Embark on a nocturnal walk or drive with the possibility of encountering creatures of the night such as leopard cats, civets, and hog-nosed badgers

Day 6 - 9Jiuzhaigou Nature Reserve

Please note that due to a devastating earthquake in 2017, access is limited within Jiuzhaigou National Park. Contact us for the most up-to-date information on access and available experiences.

Admire the thousand-armed statue of Guanyin, carved from a single block of wood, in the Ming Dynasty Bao’en Temple • Arrive in the iridescent surroundings of Jiuzhaigou • Hike through the primeval forests of Jiuzhaigou • Make your way to the secluded Pearl Shoal Waterfall and Five-Color Pond, where brilliant blue and green hues intermingle in multicolored harmony • Share lunch with a Tibetan family in their home, located in one of Jiuzhaigou’s nine Tibetan villages • Visit a reserve that protects no less than 1,600 golden snub-nosed monkeys
