
Grottoes and Cave Temples with Archaeologist Professor Zhao Chao 赵超 [in Mandarin] (Event #32)
Chinese grottoes and ancient cave temples are major landmarks in China. To learn more about them, we invited Professor Zhao Chao, former researcher at the Institute of Archaeology of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, to teach us about the archeological significance behind some of China’s most unique grottoes including Dunhuang, Maiji Mountain, Yun Gang and Longmen.

Zhao Chao
Zhao Chao was a researcher at the Institute of Archaeology and professor of the graduate school of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing. He is also a member of the Chinese Archaeological Society and the Chinese Ancient Characters Research Association, and he is the Vice President of Chinese Society of Chinese Painting. His main areas of research are: Chinese unearthed documents, ancient inscriptions, ancient philology, archaeology in the Han and Tang Dynasties, research on Han paintings and the history of ancient cultural thoughts. He is often invited to teach Chinese Tang Dynasty archaeology at British and Japanese universities.
