Modern Architecture in the Countryside: In Discussion with Hua Li 华黎 [in Mandarin] (Event #16)
We had the pleasure of talking to world-renowned architect Hua Li, founder of Trace Architecture Office (TAO), an organization internationally recognized for its modern and sustainable design. Hua Li’s approach to architecture is one wherein structures exist in harmony with their environment and nature. Join us to hear about some of his biggest projects and discover how modern architecture can bring new life to the countryside around China.

Hua Li
Born in 1972 in China, Hua Li received his B.Arch. from Tsinghua University in 1994. He then studied at Yale University and received his M. Arch. in 1999. He practiced in New York and Beijing before founding TAO (Trace Architecture Office) in 2009. Li and TAO’s key works include Museum of Handcraft Paper, Wuyishan Bamboo Raft Factory, Forest Building, and Split Courtyard House. They have won several important architectural awards including Design Vanguard 2012 by Architectural Record Magazine, Young Architect Award of 2012 at the China Architecture Media Awards, and ARCASIA Awards for Architecture. TAO’s works have been exhibited in Venice, Vienna, Berlin and New York, and have been widely published internationally. Hua Li also teaches at Tsinghua University and the Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing as a visiting professor and has been a guest critic for studio reviews at HKU, University Arts Berlin and Tianjin University.
