In commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in the Pacific Theater, WildChina and The Royal Asiatic Society Beijing are pleased to present a series of specially curated journeys through history. These thoughtfully crafted programs offer a poignant opportunity to reflect upon the pivotal events and collaborative efforts that ultimately led to victory.
From this crucible of conflict arose a remarkable partnership, as courageous Western aviators took to the skies above China, their bravery and sacrifice forever woven into the fabric of this nation’s history. From the eastern shores of China, where the Doolittle Raiders ignited a spark of hope in Quzhou, to the far-flung reaches of Yunnan, where the Flying Tigers and Hump pilots stood shoulder-to-shoulder with their Chinese comrades, the story of Western aviators in World War II China whispers a saga of courage, determination, and international solidarity.
Embark on a captivating journey through World War II China, retrace the legacy and footsteps of the US airmen, and discover the profound impact of Western aviators on this nation’s fight for freedom.
The Doolittle Raid
In the bleak spring of 1942, with the Axis powers seemingly unstoppable, the United States was in dire need of a morale-boosting victory. Amidst the gloom, a daring mission emerged to strike a blow against the heart of the Japanese empire – Tokyo itself, as well as other Japanese cities.
Led by Lieutenant Colonel James H. Doolittle, 80 airmen volunteered to fly 16 modified B-25 bombers, taking flight from the USS Hornet on a high-stakes mission to bolster Allied morale and shatter Japan’s myth of invincibility.

Meet the experts hosting this journey:
Explore a unique perspective on US-China relations with our host Melinda Liu, a Beijing-based journalist and daughter of Tung-Sheng Liu, an Honorary Doolittle Raider renowned for aiding the downed pilots at great personal risk. Born and educated in the US, Melinda has lived and worked in China for nearly 30 years as Newsweek’s Beijing Bureau Chief. By helping establish the Doolittle Raid Memorial Hall in Quzhou, co-directing documentary films such as “Doolittle Raiders: A China Story” and advising Yunnan’s Flying Tigers Research Association, she aspires to illuminate the intertwined American and Chinese WWII histories. Join Melinda in an exploration of East and West in WWII China, bridging past sacrifices with present understanding in a compelling narrative journey.
Alan Babington-Smith is another host of this program, utilizing his professional knowledge and connections as founder of the Royal Asiatic Society Beijing (RASBJ). Alan has lived and worked as a banker in the UK, China, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Poland and the Baltics, and has lived in China since 2000. His great-uncle commanded the WWII “Dambusters” in Europe and his aunt Constance Babington-Smith was a pioneer in interpreting WWII aerial photography in the UK and the USA. Alan has published the story of British missionary Dr. Stanley Babington, who built the Enze Medical Bureau in Linhai, where the Doolittle Raiders’ crew 7 received life-saving medical treatment.

The first stop of the day is Linhai Enze Medical Bureau, a pioneering hospital founded in 1901 by British missionary Dr. Stanley Babington, and uncover its role in a war time rescue: here, Doolittle Raider Ted Lawson and his crew received lifesaving treatment in 1942 • Hike up Jinshan Hill to the Thousand Buddha Pagoda, a 1,200-year-old sanctuary that offered solace through the ages • Stroll along the ancient Taizhou Great Walls, a steadfast sentinel of China’s coastal history, before exploring Linhai’s mysteries and flavors as night takes hold.
Begin the day with taiji (tai chi) at dawn, then set off through landscapes laced with echoes of the past • Pause in Yiwu on your way to Quzhou (3 hours), and walk into the vibrant marketplace • Witness WWII’s shadows at the Germ Warfare Museum, where the local story of survival and resistance is etched in memory • Arrive in Quzhou and unwind with a final reflection in a tranquil teahouse.

He was sheltered by Liao Shiyuan, a courageous Chinese villager who risked everything to care for him • Later, depart Zhejiang on a high-speed train to Shanghai (2.5h) and check into the historic Peace Hotel, once a pivotal site during WWII • Enjoy drinks with views of the Bund, reflecting on Shanghai’s rich history as a refuge and hub of international intrigue.
Discover stories at Shanghai Jewish Museum, revealing how the city was once home to those fleeing persecution • Stand in the Sihang Warehouse, where 800 brave Chinese soldiers once defied Japanese forces in 1937, now a museum of valor • Wander through the Former French Concession and immerse in its charming blend of eastern and western architecture • Enjoy a farewell dinner to celebrate the journey’s memories.
