On this National Geographic ‘Tour of a Lifetime’, you will taste your way through the imperial banquets of Beijing to the spice bazaars of Sichuan (while taking in all the sights, too).

You’ll unlock the secrets of authentic Chinese food and learn how to shop, cook, and eat like a local.

Itinerary

Day 1Beijing

Your WildChina Beijing guide will meet you at the arrival hall of the airport and will be your host while you are in Beijing • Your WildChina guide, driver, and vehicle will take you to your hotel to check in and relax • Attend the trip orientation led by Fuchsia at your hotel for an overview of your next twelve days • If you would like, enjoy an optional dinner with Fuchsia at a lively siheyuan or local courtyard restaurant.

Day 2Beijing

Transfer outside of the city for a hike along the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall, snaking through an auburn spectrum of fall shades • Enjoy a refreshing seasonal lunch at a local countryside restaurant • In the evening, enjoy a savory traditional Mongolian hotpot dinner.

 

Day 3Beijing

Gaze across Tiananmen Square and take in the full weight of its historical and cultural significance • Enter the Forbidden City, where emperors ruled, concubines fluttered their fans, and eunuchs schemed for five hundred years • Rest your legs with a lunch at a local restaurant bordering Houhai Lake • Head back and spend some time relaxing before your succulent Peking duck feast at one of Beijing’s most celebrated restaurants.

 

Day 4Beijing to Xi'an

Channel your energy into a private taiji Lesson with a master at the Temple of Heaven, alongside line dancers and kite fliers • For lunch, sample a bowl of traditional wheat-based noodles at one of our favorite local eateries • Transfer to the airport for your flight to Xi’an • Upon arriving in Xi’an we will pick you up and transfer you to downtown • Enjoy an optional dinner with Fuchsia, who will be on the hunt for a fresh serving of lamb stew served with warm dipping bread.

 

Day 5Xi'an

Let the savory aroma wafting from the countless food stalls of Xi’an Muslim Quarter envelop you as you sample Halal skewers, roast mutton and persimmon cakes on your way to Xi’an’s Great Mosque • Enjoy a lunch of local Shaanxi specialties • Catch a close-up general’s view of the unflinching, eternally-stationed Terracotta Warriors Army • Tear through bite-sized pieces of heaven during a delicious snack dinner at a local restaurant.

 

Day 6Xi'an to Chengdu

After breakfast, transfer to the train station for your ride to Chengdu • Upon arrival in Chengdu, grab a late lunch at one of Chengdu’s most famous and longestablished snack joints • After lunch, spend the afternoon sampling tea at a local teahouse, watching local mahjong matches and discovering local delicacies as you explore the city on foot • For an experience that can’t be replicated anywhere else, head to a Sichuan hot spot for dinner.

 

Day 7Chengdu

In the morning, stop by the Giant Panda Breeding Center for a glimpse of that iconic black and white • For lunch enjoy an array of authentic Sichuan cuisine, Fuchsia’s first love • Spend a relaxing afternoon admiring Wenshu Monastery’s tea houses, intricate relief carvings and Buddhist relics • In the evening, enjoy a magnificent banquet private kitchen.

 

Day 8Chengdu to Hangzhou

Drop by a wholesale spice ingredient market to browse the local wares while Fuchsia points out her favorite add-ins for substance and zest • Head to the Sichuan Culinary Museum for lunch, then roll up your sleeves for a Sichuan cooking lesson • Fly to Hangzhou in late afternoon • Enjoy dinner on your own before retiring for the evening.

 

Day 9Hangzhou

Set out by boat across West Lake, in full view of the countless gardens and pagodas peppering the lakeside • Enjoy lunch of classic Hangzhou dishes • Head to Longjing village to walk in the tea plantations followed by a cup of tea in the tea garden • Enjoy dinner at one of Hangzhou’s most reputable restaurants.

 

Day 10Hangzhou to Shanghai

In the morning, make your way through the old street and traditional Chinese pharmacy • Followed by lunch with tasty local food • Transfer to the train station for your high-speed train to Shanghai • The rest of the day at your own leisure.

 

Day 11Shanghai

Take a walk down the elegant tree-lined streets of the Former French Concession, awash in oldworld residential charm • Enjoy a lunch of xiaolongbao (soup dumplings) at a restaurant of Fuchsia’s special pick • Nestled in Shanghai’s old town next to the city’s famed Yu Garden, the Yuyuan Bazaar is a souvenir hunter’s paradise. Tucked amid Ming Dynasty-era buildings, this winding maze of alleyways is filled with an eclectic collection of shops and food stalls hawking local snacks • Ride the world’s fastest elevator to the world’s highest observation deck in China’s tallest building Shanghai Tower and feel yourself blown away by awe-inspiring views of one of the planet’s largest cities • If time permits, take a stroll along the Bund, rising majestically across the river from Shanghai’s electric skyline with a patchwork of sublime art deco and neoclassical buildings • For dinner, enjoy plate after plate of delicious Shanghainese cuisine.

Day 12Shanghai

Spend your free day exploring, relaxing, or shopping at your own pace • At 6pm, meet in your hotel lobby to transfer to a grand colonial mansion, where your delectable farewell dinner awaits.

 

Day 13Depart from Shanghai

We’ll arrange separate transfers to the airport based on your flight schedules • Check in for your departing flight and take off when the time comes, bringing your culinary adventure to a close.

Arrival

This journey starts in Beijing. Beijing has two international airports, Beijing Capital Airport (PEK) and Beijing Daxing International Airport (PKX). We can pick you up at either airport.

Beijing Capital Airport is about twice as close to the city center (29 km / 15 miles) than Beijing Daxing Airport (46km / 29 miles).

Both airports have daily flights from major international airports around the world.

Departure

This journey ends in Shanghai. Shanghai has two major international airports, Shanghai Hongqiao (SHA) and Shanghai Pudong (PVG). We can take you to your departure flight at either airport.

Pudong mainly serves international flights, while Hongqiao mainly serves domestic and regional flights in East Asia.

Hongqiao is closer to the city center (13km / 8 miles) than Pudong (30 km / 19 miles). However, Pudong is connected to the Maglev, currently the fastest commercial train in the world, which can reach the airport from downtown Shanghai in under nine minutes.

What to expect

Trip Difficulty: Easy Adventure

This journey is considered an easy adventure. Easy adventure includes half to full days outside the hotel with possible visits to sites no more than 2 hours away. We drive on paved city roads and stay in 5-star or boutique hotels and may spend up to 2 hours walking per day.

Your Guides

Your guide will arrange the logistics of your trip, including meals, hotel reservations, sites, and activities, as well as providing you with information about the local region. Your WildChina guide is specific to each local region and will be confirmed during booking.

Meals and Water

Meals are included, as listed in your itinerary. We strive to arrange meals that highlight authentic local cuisine in clean, local establishments.

It is safe to drink bottled mineral water, but tap water, even in 5-star hotels, is not safe for drinking. We will provide bottled water, tea, and snacks throughout your journey.

We request guests with severe allergies to consult their physicians prior to traveling and to bring all necessary medicines with them. Inform us ahead of time of specific allergies, such as peanuts or shellfish, or sensitivities to MSG, so that we can do our best to ensure these items are not used in your meals.

How do I secure my spot on this tour?

We will continue to work with you until your trip is perfect.

For international bookings: Once you are ready to book, a USD$1,000 deposit, per person, is required to begin reserving your arrangements. This will go towards your trip costs and will be taken off your final balance amount.

For bookings made in China: Once you are ready to book, a RMB7,000 deposit, per person, is required. This will go towards your trip costs and will be taken off your final balance amount.

 

 

 

 

What is the payment schedule?

1. Deposit:
A deposit of 1,000 USD is required to secure your reservation. Once your deposit has been received, we will send your confirmation along with a detailed itinerary and all the information you’ll need to prepare for your journey.

2. Full payment:
Full trip payment should be made 90 days prior to departure. If you’re booking within 90 days of your departure, you may be asked to pay make the full payment straight away.

Is this trip guaranteed to run?

This trip will be scheduled to run once we receive bookings from six (6) passengers. Should the journey be cancelled due to lack of sign-ups or government restrictions, WildChina will fully refund any deposits or fees paid.
