About this Journey

Even the faintest glimpse of Hong Kong from afar has the mind wondering how a city of such size could fit onto one tiny island. On the ground, immersed in the heart of the city itself, things are no clearer. Buildings just seem to fit, or to stand out, with absolute mastery. This journey unveils some of Hong Kong’s most spectacular architecture. From historic temples to colonial landmarks to cutting-edge skyscrapers this journey reveals how architecture reflects the city’s cultural identity and rapid evolution.

What we love
  • Tracing the city’s cultural identity through its historic temples, colonial landmarks, and modern skyscrapers
  • Exploring iconic residential spaces like Choi Hung Estate and the Monster Building, revealing the city’s vibrant urban life
  • Cruising Victoria Harbour on the Star Ferry, soaking in the skyline views from atop the water
Itinerary

Meet at Hotel

The architectural journey begins at the hotel, where the story of Hong Kong’s design heritage comes to life. Join an in-house expert in a 15-minute tour around the property, getting to know the design philosophy, historical context, and cultural symbolism. This experience sets the tone for a day exploring the intricate relationship between architecture and society, offering a deeper understanding of Hong Kong’s evolving identity through its built environment.

Choi Hung Estate

Step into the vibrant heart of Choi Hung Estate, starting at the North entrance on Lung Cheung Road. Wander through the covered walkways beneath the iconic residential blocks, soaking in the sights and sounds of this historic neighborhood. Marvel at the towering “Rainbow” buildings and discover the legacy of Hong Kong’s pioneering public housing project, completed in 1964. Once home to 7,400 units and a Silver Award winner in 1965, this self-contained community supported the city’s industrial boom with schools, shops, and amenities. Don’t miss this chance to experience a piece of Hong Kong’s architectural heritage before its redevelopment begins in 2028.

Kowloon Walled City Park

Visit Kowloon Walled City Park, built partly atop the old Kowloon City Hills and the site of the infamous Kowloon Walled City. Explore the ruins of the pre-1920s walled city gates and marvel at a bronze 3-D recreation of the enclave, once a densely populated, lawless labyrinth housing 35,000 residents in just 2.6 hectares.

Lunch in Kowloon City

Savor the vibrant flavors of Kowloon City, a neighborhood brimming with culinary diversity. Known as “Little Thailand” for its thriving Thai expatriate community, the area offers an array of authentic Thai dishes alongside traditional local eateries serving noodles and quick bites. For a truly local experience, visit the city’s most renowned Halal Chinese restaurant, famous for its juicy beef patties—though be prepared to join the daily queue. Let your taste buds explore the rich tapestry of cultures that define this historic district.

Monster Building in Quarry Bay

Immerse in the world of Hong Kong’s urban vernacular architecture with a visit to the famed Monster Building, also known as Parker Estate. Built in the 1960s to address the city’s growing housing needs, this high-density residential complex reflects Hong Kong’s post-WWII social and economic transformation. Its striking, tightly packed façade—featured in Transformers: Age of Extinction—has made it an Instagram sensation, but its true significance lies in its role as a pragmatic solution to urban living. Explore the below-ground shopping center and bustling podium-level shops, which showcase the vibrant daily life of its residents. As one of the few surviving examples of this architectural typology, the Monster Building stands as a testament to Hong Kong’s resourcefulness, identity, and spirit, capturing the essence of a city constantly reinventing itself.

Central Walking Tour

The walking tour begins at the iconic HSBC Headquarters, the fourth iteration of the building designed by Sir Norman Foster. Marvel at its groundbreaking design, rumored to be fully dismantlable and relocatable, and explore a visual aid beneath the structure that traces Hong Kong’s architectural and urban development. From there, discover landmarks like the striking Bank of China Tower, the historic Judiciary Building, and Statue Square, once home to Wardley Street. This walking tour offers a captivating journey through the city’s architectural legacy, reflecting its past, present, and future.

On the way: Man Mo Temple

The journey continues to Man Mo Temple, passing through Jubilee Street and the revitalized Central Market, a blend of heritage and modern design. Man Mo Temple has been a spiritual cornerstone of Hong Kong for over 180 years. Immerse in its serene atmosphere and learn about the basics of Taoist beliefs and the temple’s integrated design, which reflects its enduring role in local daily life.

Hollywood Road and Tai Kwun

Walk along Hollywood Road, passing vibrant art galleries and old herbal tea shop, and arrive at Tai Kwun, the historic former police headquarters. Proceed to the prison block, where preserved cells and the newly built facilities tell the story of Tai Kwun’s 180-year history. Once the colony’s symbol of authority, this revitalized complex now blends heritage with contemporary creativity, hosting art exhibits and nurturing local talent. Discover how Tai Kwun—literally “Big Hall”—reflects Hong Kong’s past while shaping its future.

Victoria Harbour on Star Ferry

Conclude the day with a ride on the iconic Star Ferry, a symbol of Hong Kong’s heritage and resilience. Glide across Victoria Harbour, taking in breathtaking views of the skyline, where modern skyscrapers stand alongside historic landmarks, a perfect backdrop to reflect on the day’s journey through Hong Kong’s architectural, cultural, and historical tapestry.
