About this Journey

In Zhejiang’s misty and mountainous southwest, Songyang county has, in many ways, remained unchanged for centuries. Here, artisans cast traditional iron knives in street-side stores, and communities participate in ancient fengshui practices.

Local chefs steam hand-cut noodles and farmers grow local green tea that is now thought of as some of the best in China. However, beyond the county’s traditional lifestyle lies a surprising modern art scene.

Tea fields have become home to modern teahouses where young entrepreneurs reinvigorate the culture of their ancestors and dusty sugar factories have been transformed into modern architectural masterpieces.

What we love
  • Slurping noodles in Songyang Old Town
  • Learning about local innovation in the Damu Mountain teahouse
  • Hiking to Yangjiatang Village and watching the sun set over the valley

Itinerary

Day 1Arrive in Songyang

Upon arriving in Lishui train station (3hr train from Shanghai), your local WildChina guide will meet you in the arrival hall with your private vehicle on standby to take you to your hotel in Songyang (~1hr drive) • Spend the evening at your leisure (B,L)

Day 2Songyang and Surrounding Villages

Start the day in Songyang Old Town. A truly authentic Old Street, we’ll visit in the morning to see local people at work and stop by the town’s famous noodle shop, where steaming woks house handmade noodles cooking with vegetables in a fragrant broth • Songyang’s Damu Mountain offers mountain views, scenic biking, and of course, Songyang tea fields • Watch farmers hand-picking tea that is now widely regarded as some of the best in China as we cycle around the tea terraces • Stop for local tea in the Damu Mountain Teahouse, an incubator for Songyang cultural cultivation and innovation (B,L)

Day 3Songyang and Surrounding Villages

Stop at Shimen Bridge, an ancient bridge that has been converted into a viewing platform for Songyi River and the Wuyang Dam • Brown sugar production used to be a major source of income for local Songyang people before poor factory conditions led to many families turning their sugar workshops into tea fields. The brown sugar factory we’ll visit today is not only an incredible place to learn about traditional sugar production but an architectural wonder in its own right • Visit Wang Village, an ancient village surrounded by modern factories, and proud hometown of Wangjing, an imperial Scholar in the Ming Dynasty and editor of the 600-year-old “Yongle Encyclopedia” • Yangjiatang Village, a small community that has been inhabited since 1655, is surrounded by five towering mountains and hugged by a small stream – the perfect location according to fengshui. In Yangjiatang, we’ll meet local residents and learn how fengshui has infused itself in their culture. We’ll then wander up to the 20 wooden Qing Dynasty structures that still remain on the hillside before truly understanding why local people call the town ‘Gold Potala’ as the sun starts to set and the yellow walls of the homes shine gold (B,L)

Day 4Depart for home

Many of the villages surrounding Songyang tick the boxes on our idyllic village checklist but Chenjiapu Village, located close to Songyang, is on our list of favorite villages for one solid reason – it’s incredible Xianfeng Bookstore. Bright rooms filled from floor to ceiling with beautifully presented books make it somewhere we can while away hours • Transfer back to Lishui for your train home (B,L)
